COPTER Regulation Amendments
In July 2025, the Government of Alberta approved amendments to the Community Organization Property Tax Exemption Regulation (COPTER) under the Municipal Government Act. The changes aim to improve clarity and consistency in how property tax exemptions are applied to non-profit organizations across the province.
Key updates include:
-
Clear eligibility for NPOs serving disadvantaged populations.
-
Expanded exemptions for certain nonprofit continuing care and supportive living facilities.
-
New criteria for temporary and transitional housing.
-
Administrative updates for clarity, including definitions and affordable housing alignment.
These updates provide municipalities and non-profits with clearer guidance and more equitable treatment of facilities and services.
