Networking and Information for Alberta's Property Tax Experts

April 2026 | Issue 40

“No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow.” — Hal Borland

President's Message

As we close out the month of March, AMTPA is proud to recognize International Women’s Day and Women’s Month. It is a time to honour the remarkable contributions of women across the municipal tax, assessment, and property administration fields. Whether delivering frontline services, managing billing, complex valuation work, strategic leadership and everything in between, their expertise, innovation, and commitment strengthen our profession every day.

With the release of the 2026 Alberta Provincial Budget, a significant impact for municipalities is the continued increase in the Alberta School Requisition. The 2026 Alberta Provincial Budget boasts the largest education investment in Alberta’s history with $10.8 billion in operating funding. While municipalities collect the education property tax on behalf of the province, the responsibility for explaining these increases often falls to municipalities. This year’s requisition reinforces the importance of clear and concise communication with taxpayers and thoughtful planning within municipal revenue strategies.

We have several important initiatives that are underway, and I’m pleased to highlight a few:

  • The 2026 Annual Conference - Edmonton, September 23-25, 2026

The Conference Committee is working hard to deliver an information-rich experience. If your municipality is interested in sponsoring the event, please reach out to our Executive Assistant, Alyssa (assistant@amtpa.ca), for a copy of the Municipal Partnership Package.

  • Representation at the Alberta Assessors Association Conference
Director of Relations, Stephen Leroux, will represent AMTPA in Calgary, April 15th-17th
  • 2026 Training and Education Schedule

Director of Education, Roxane Preedin has developed the 2026 Training Schedule. Please feel welcome to share future training ideas with her.

  • Strengthening Partnerships

The Board has approved the creation of a collaborative working group to formalize a relationship between AMTPA and OMTRA, following a productive virtual meeting between the two organizations on January 29th.

If you or your municipality would like to be featured in a future newsletter, or if you an innovative, resourceful, or efficient initiative to share, we would love to hear from you.

Thank you,

Denise Schmaltz

President

Data Centre Property Taxes

"The Government of Alberta is taking steps to become North America’s destination of choice for artificial intelligence (AI) data centre investment. Data centres can be a source of property tax revenue for your community, but municipalities should be aware that not all components of a data centre are subject to assessment for municipal property tax."
