President's Message
|
|
Greetings colleagues,
As many of you are in the midst of a very busy tax season, I want to extend, on behalf of the Board, our sincere appreciation for the hard work and dedication you bring to your roles. The preparation and issuance of annual taxation notices, responding to inquiries from property owners, and ensuring the timely collection of property tax revenue are no small feats. Your efforts support not only your local municipalities but also the Province of Alberta and other requisitioning bodies. Your contributions are vital, and you should be proud of the meaningful role you play in this important work.
Over the past two months, the Board has been actively engaged in a number of key initiatives, including legislative reviews, education planning, the audit of our 2024 financial statements, and preparations for our upcoming annual conference. I’d like to take a moment to highlight our recent legislative review activities:
- April 18, 2025: We submitted our recommendations for the Land and Property Rights Tribunal (LRPT) Business Process Review. Thank you to the members who shared their expertise and insights—your input is instrumental in helping to shape and improve provincial processes.
- May 26, 2025: We participated in Part 1 of the Business Improvement Area (BIA) Regulation Policy Review alongside the Province and other municipal stakeholders. This initial phase focused on enhancing the current business-based tax framework. Part 2 of the engagement is scheduled for August, and we look forward to continuing the dialogue.
Looking ahead, several Board positions will be open for nomination, election, or re-election at our Annual General Meeting on September 26, 2025. The roles of President, Treasurer, and Director of Education are up for consideration. If you are interested in getting involved or would like to learn more, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Lastly, I encourage everyone to stay active in the Members Q & A Forum. It’s a great space to connect, collaborate, and share knowledge with your fellow municipal tax professionals.
Thank you for all that you do supporting your municipalities.
Warm regards,
Denise Schmaltz

Whether it’s a topic you're passionate about, a speaker who inspired you, or something you’re curious to learn more about, we want to hear it. The first 10 viable suggestions for education topics or speaker recommendations will each earn the submitter a $50 gift card to a place of their choosing as a thank you!
Suggestions can include virtual, in-person, or conference keynote speakers. We’ll evaluate submissions based on:
-
Innovation: Is it a new idea or a fresh take on a known challenge?
-
Relevancy: Does it align with current trends or future needs in our industry?
-
Reference & Track Record: Has the speaker/trainer delivered effective sessions before? Have you seen or taken training from them?
-
Delivery & Accessibility: Is the session available virtually? For keynotes, is the speaker based in Alberta or Canada?
-
Practical Application: Is the idea valuable and applicable to our members?
