Upcoming Events

RMA has released The MGA Special Lien: What it is and how to use it. This guide, developed in partnership with Brownlee and through funding from the Government of Alberta, is intended to support rural municipalities in understanding when and how to utilize the special lien granted to municipalities under ss. 348 and 348.1 of the MGA to recover unpaid property taxes, and in particular related to oil and gas property. The guide also examines the limitations of the special lien and how it aligns with other existing tax recovery tools.

To support members in utilizing the guide, RMA and Brownlee are offering two identical webinars in the coming weeks. To allow for open and frank discussion on the special lien and other tax recovery challenges, the webinars are open only to elected officials and staff of RMA full member municipalities, and registration is required. The webinar dates, times, and registration links are below:

 Tuesday, June 13, 9:00 – 10:00am

Thursday, June 15, 2:00 – 3:00 pm

This webinar will provide RMA members with an overview of RMA's recently released special liens guide. Led by Greg Plester, Partner at Brownlee LLP, participants will learn how the guide can be used to improve understanding of special liens, their limitations, how they may be used with other existing legislative tools to recover unpaid taxes from oil and gas companies. The webinar will also allow time for open discussion and questions on special liens and other tax recovery tools.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Our member spotlight this month introduces Megan, the Property Tax Officer with the Town of Canmore.  Megan worked for the Town for 3 years prior to coming to the dark side as the Property Tax & Utility expert for the last 8 years.

Megan joined the Association for further resources and networking opportunities in property taxes. "It’s a lonely world to try and figure out the ins and outs of property taxes without being able to ask questions and to bounce around ideas with others! The legislative requirements and deadlines can be intimidating, so having easily accessible resources (and help to interpret the MGA jargon!) has been fantastic."

Originally from Ottawa, Megan went to university in Toronto for New Media (web design). She moved out to the Rockies after graduation where she met her Australian husband-to-be. Before settling down in Canmore 18 years ago, her meandering path led to Australia and Europe before settling and initially pursuing a career in Events Management. Family life had her trade in the chaotic events world for a Monday-Friday gig in property taxes & utilities where she was able to pursue her love of spreadsheets, organization, and process improvement.

On her off time, Megan enjoys the beautiful outdoors playing hockey, mountain biking, cross country skiing, visual arts, camping. Her other full time job consists of chauffeuring and attending the schedule of her two children.

As our association grows, AMTPA aims to offer members new opportunities to access support through collaboration. We are currently looking at developing a mentorship program which will open up a network of communication between experienced taxation professionals and those who may be newer to the field, or even just feel they have more to learn. To ensure that this program suits the needs of our members, we will be forwarding a short survey in July and providing an introduction of the program at our 2023 Conference.
